Looking for that special ‘song’ for your first dance can be very difficult! You need to think of something that that both of you like! You might want to consider the following when making that final decision...
The length of the song - You don’t want it to drag or be there all night, but it is one of those memorable moments at your wedding so you don’t want a short number either. Try and aim for around three minutes long and probably not more than around five minutes. A long enough song will also give the family and your friends time to join you on the dance floor and nto forgetting those important photos that guests will want to take.
Lyrics are perhaps the most important thing to consider. If you don’t have a song that as a couple you can relate to, see if you can find something that is similar to how you met . There are some songs that sound very much like love songs, but on closer inspection aren't appropriate for weddings....A great example is the Police’s, Every Breath You Take. This has been played during countless weddings due to the widely held belief that it is a gentle love song. According to Sting, the song is about love, but it’s quite a bit more “sinister and ugly” than people think(!)
"Every single day,
Every word you say,
Every game you play,
Every night you stay,
I'll be watching you".
Sting wrote the song during the collapse of his marriage, projecting his feelings of jealousy and obsession over his lost lover. He claims the stalker-like vibe of the lyrics were inspired by the desire for surveillance and control during his divorce! Probably one to avoid!!
This might seem strange to consider, but the pace or speed of a song can be too slow to comfortably dance to, just as they can be too fast! It is easy to check though, grab your willing partner(!) and test it out with a test run slow dance...
Here's a few modern and popular "first dance" wedding songs that we often get asked for:-
- All Of Me -John Legend
- Just The Way You Are -Bruno Mars
- I’m Yours – Jason Mraz
- XO – Beyonce
- Adore You - Miley Cyrus
